Background: Hispanics and Stroke

Who is eligible for the Northern Manhattan Family Study?

You are eligible to participate if your family has been selected from the original participants in NOMAS. Your family members include: parents, sisters, brothers, spouses, children, and grandchildren 18 years of age or older.

What tests will be performed?

You will receive FREE state of the art tests:

• Echocardiogram to image your heart
• Carotid Doppler to image the thickness of the walls of the major arteries in your neck
• Blood tests, including cholesterol
• Blood pressure measurement
• Assessment to determine your vascular risk factors

How much time will you have to spend for the study?

Your total participation will be 3 – 4 hours at a time convenient for you.

Do you have to pay or will you be compensated for your participation?

The study is FREE to you and your family members. You will receive:

• Breakfast on the day you come
• Health assessment to bring to your doctor
• Results of your blood tests (mailed)
• Money for transportation and time

Risk Factors for Stroke

• Family history of Stroke or Heart Attack
• Heart diseases
• Hypertension
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• High cholesterol levels
• Obesity
• Smoking
• Lack of physical activity
• Excessive alcohol consumption
